The Process and Benefits of Rolfing

Rolfing is renown for activating the inherent healing powers of our bodies when they are balanced, centered and well-coordinated within the field of gravity. It is a system of bodywork developed over decades of research by an American biochemist named Ida Rolf, an innovator who understood the important role of fascia. Fascia is a type of connective tissue which wraps and binds every muscle, bone, organ and nerve into a cooperative whole system. While Rolfing alone can’t remove life’s stressors, it can help your body become more resilient, comfortable and self-corrective.

This is accomplished by working together as a treatment team to sculpt your body around its central, vertical axis in three-dimensional space. Various depths and vectors of pressure, joint mobilizations, traction, rocking and other techniques are applied step-by-logical step to reposition your skeleton, balance muscle groups and improve the overall health of soft tissues.

Clients participate by drawing breath and awareness into the areas being addressed, changing positions, stretching and creating movements both on and off the bodywork table. New skills and possibilities are explored and practiced. In this way, Rolfing sessions are interactive, dynamic and co-creative.

Some people prefer deeper, more intense or vigorous bodywork. Others need a gentler approach. This can vary from one part of your body to another or from one day to the next. In fact, some of the deepest tissues, such as around your brain and spinal cord, require us to make contact with the greatest delicacy. We need to listen to what your body is asking for which will allow it to release from the past and adopt new patterns of organization. We’ll shape the direction and content of your sessions together and I will alway give you control over your sessions and body.
